It looks at those typically responsible forcoaching, both internal and external to the organisation, and how to develop acoaching culture. Deciding when coaching is the best developmentintervention is key to harnessing its potential. Lastly, the factsheet considersthe central role of line managers, HR and L&D practitioners in managingcoaching and mentoring activities.CIPD ViewpointThe deployment of coaching and mentoring arrangements is now embeddedamong employers as a widespread development tool and performancemanagement technique. Indeed the flexibility and, when delivered optimally,relatively low cost of these techniques makes them a particularly appropriatelearning intervention for difficult or uncertain economic times.However, though now maturing as a routine aspect of management andlearning and development, there’s still a lack of understanding about how bestto use coaching and mentoring and in which specific situations sucharrangements will be most effective. It’s important that the HR and L&Dfunction understands when each type of arrangement is appropriate andmakes sure that all parties are fully equipped for their role in mentoring orcoaching. The importance of developing appropriate skills among mentorsand coaches is crucial in this respect. Attempts to assess and position thevalue of such arrangements may be hindered by a lack of clear evaluationtechniques so it’s important to use effective methods to evaluate coaching ormentoring impact.What are coaching and mentoring?Coaching and mentoring are development techniques based on the use ofone-to-one discussions to enhance an individual’s skills, knowledge or workperformance.
It’s possible to draw distinctions between coaching and mentoring although inpractice the two terms are often used interchangeably. While the focus of thisfactsheet is on coaching, much of also applies to mentoring.What is coaching?
