If she receives Merlin’s type AB blood, her antibodies will bind to his A and B antigens and agglutination will result. This is not a safe transfusion. 11. Merlin, being type AB, does not have anti-A or anti-B antibodies. He is the “universal recipient” because he will not fight off any A, B, AB, or O blood. Cassandra is a compatible donor. ANOTHER WAY TO ANSWER: Cassandra is type O, therefore she does not have A or B antigens on her blood cells. She is the “universal donor” because her lack of antigens ensures that a recipient will not reject the transfusion, even if they make anti-A or anti-B antibodies....
