1 of 2 CHE 3013 Rate Operations I Fall 2011 Homework 4 Due: Monday, September 19, 2011 1 Problems, 24 points total (a) (9 points) What is the hexane flow rate delivered by P-304 in the system shown below under the following conditions: Pump suction 30 psia, 188 ° F Hexane pressure at outlet of HE-310 20 psia Pressure drop across control valve 7 psi Pressure drop across heat exchanger 5 psi 30 psia 250 ft 2 in Sch 40 pipe 8 90 degree elbows, short radius ( r / D =8) 4 Full-port gate valves, fully open 1 Swing check valve, fully open 1 Control valve 20 psia 13 ft P-304 HE-310 The pump curve for P-304 is attached and can be approximated by the equation 2 3 2 10 197 . 1 10 784 . 2 28 . 56 gpm x gpm x TDH + = where TDH is in feet of fluid. For complete turbulence, the friction factor is independent of Reynolds number, i.e. Re →∞ in friction factor equations. Note: Steady state is achieved when Δ P pump = Δ P system . This requires an iterative solution.
