1 of 2 CHE 3013 Rate Operations I Fall 2011 Homework 5 Due: Monday, September 26, 2011 5 Problems, 18 points total 1. (3 points) Consider the flat plate and cylinder shown below. The inner and outer surfaces are at temperatures T 1 and T 2 , respectively. For one-dimensional, steady-state heat transfer with constant properties, sketch the temperature distribution on T-x coordinates for the flat plate and T-r coordinates for the cylinder. In each case, give a brief explanation justifying the shape of the temperature profile. r 1 r 2 x 1 x 2 x (a) (b) 2. (3 points) Problem 3.2 (a) in Incropera, et al., 6 th Edition. 3. (3 points) A 1-inch Schedule 40 carbon steel pipe ( k = 35 Btu/hr ft ° F) carries saturated steam at 300 ° F. The pipe is insulated with a 2-inch thick layer of calcium silicate insulation ( k = 0.036 Btu/hr ft ° F). The temperature at the outside surface of the insulation is 90 ° F. (a) Calculate the heat loss per foot of pipe in Btu/hr assuming the temperature at the inside wall of the pipe is 300 ° F.

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

Kiran Temple University Fox School of Business ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
