Chem 3433 – Problem Set 4 Due before class on 9/21/11 – No Grace Period 1. A sample of a fluorocarbon gas was allowed to expand to twice its volume. In this reversible, adiabatic expansion, the temperature dropped from 298.15 K to 248.44 K. Assuming the gas “acts ideally” during the expansion, estimate C v for one mole. Next, find the change in the molar internal energy after the expansion. 2. C p can be for the fluorocarbon gas can be obtained by an experiment similar to the one in problem 1. In another experiment, the pressure of the gas dropped from 266.4 to 107.4 bar in an adiabatic expansion with simultaneous temperature dropped from 298.15 K to 248.44 K. Assuming the “gas acts” ideally during the expansion, estimate C p for one mole and find the change in the molar enthalpy after the expansion.
