Phenotypes can be determined by effects outside the nucleus There are 4 major ways: Conditional alleles (are expressed under some conditions and not others): sex-influenced, sex-limited, temperature sensitive Genetic maternal or paternal effects Cytoplasmic inheritance Genomic Imprinting

Genomic imprinting Imprinted genes : the allele from one parent is inactivated. Paternal gene imprint An allele of a certain gene inherited from the father is not expressed. Maternal gene imprint An allele of a certain gene inherited from the mother is not expressed.

Igf2 (a gene for a growth factor) imprinting in mouse: has a maternal imprint (the gene is silenced ) If a mutant allele is inherited from the father, the heterozygous offspring has a mutant phenotype. If a mutant allele is inherited from the mother the heterozygous offspring has a normal phenotype.

Genomic imprinting Mechanism: Some genes are methylated on the cytosines of their DNA. This causes them to become inactive (they cannot be transcribed) The imprint is put on the gene during meiosis or shortly thereafter and is erased at the beginning of meiosis
