Unformatted text preview: Lindsay English 411 WRITING A SUMMARY Throughout this course, writing assignments will require that you quickly establish the main idea and refer to the most significant details of the literary piece we have read in class. This short orienting part of an essay is crucial: it provides the background necessary for your reader to understand what you are talking about, and it additionally demonstrate to me (your teacher) your comprehension of the text. A summary is not a list of the details of a story in the order they occur. Instead, a summary clearly establishes the main idea of the story or poem and, if appropriate to the writing assignment, may also explain what you learned from or became aware of from having read the story or poem.
