07 Class Notes LA 1203 – Views of the American Landscape Colorado Plateau: The Province covers approximately 150,000 square miles and lies generally over 1 mile above sea level. This is an area where essentially horizontal rock layers dominate. Painted Desert - Petrified Forest National Park December 8, 1906 Petrified Forest National Monument was created by President Theodore Roosevelt stating that, “…the mineralized remains of Mesozoic forests…are of the greatest scientific interest and value and it appears that the public good would be promoted by reserving these deposits of fossilized wood as a National monument with as much land as may be necessary for the proper protection thereof.” September 23, 1932 Over 53,000 Painted Desert acres added to Monument. December 9, 1962 Petrified Forest National Park was established by an act of Congress. Common Raven - Corvus corax The Painted Desert Inn - Architect - Interior Designer: Mary Colter The Inn opened in 1940. Shut down for the war in 1942 and resumed service in 1946.
