Anabela dos Ramos March 1, 2010 Education 293A Instructor: Carey Dimmitt Reading Response # 5 Looking into and Beyond Altruistic Love… Though I am not a parent, sometimes I feel like that’s all I can be when I’m around my 12-year-old brother. To me, parental love is more than just being a parent and loving your child. You don’t have to be a parent to love a child and that’s something I believe is very important in my life. With this in mind, I feel as if I could relate parental love with altruistic love as Ackerman has discussed his ideas in the “Altruism” section of the book. The first thing that stood out to me was the story about the gorilla at the zoo protecting the human infant. It sparked a very deep interest as to finding out why the gorilla did such a thing and why it didn’t harm the child. As I thought about some possible answers, a short movie began playing in my mind. My brain replayed the moment I knew I was bound to sacrifice my life for someone else. I remembered the day
