Anabela dos Ramos November 15, 2009 Prof. Fagundes Portuguese 320 Exam 1 Auto de Inês Pereira by Gil Vicente Auto de Inês Pereira, written by Gil Vicente is an excellent piece that works its way through the constant pressure on women in the medieval era along with different characterizations of women. The main character, Inês Pereira, is shown as a young woman being pressured by the society she lives in about the importance of marriages and the benefits that come along with it. Inês shows no interest in the material things and does not find marriage a big deal. In the story, she gets married twice, where in both marriages she is not truly content with her partners but pretends to stick it out because of the constant nagging she receives from her mother who believes that marriage brings happiness financially and women are not to be alone. Her mother wanted a man who could bring forth the bread to the table and accomplish his duties in pleasing her with everything she wished for. In spite of that, an annoying but interesting woman named Lianor Vaz also seems to pressure Inês into finding the man she will spend the rest of her life with. In doing so and
