Solver
Consider solving a set of equations:
Example 1:
Find “x” such that “7x+5=19”
Example 2:
Find “x” and “y” such that “x+y=3” and “xy=1”
The figure below lists two examples of using the
Solver
routine on excel.
The various steps required to set up the spreadsheet for using
Solver
are:
1.
Assign cells to get the input for the variable(s):
Example 1:
the only variable is “x” set up a cell to get an initial guess for “x” from the user.
Example 2:
Similarly for Example 2, we have two variables “x” and “y” and hence the
spreadsheet is set up accordingly.
2.
Assign cells to calculate the equation(s) to solve:
Example 1:
Only one equation is to be solved “7x + 5 = 19”. Based on the users guess for “x”, this
cell will have a corresponding value. (ex. if “x = 1” then the cell corresponding to “7x + 5 = ” will
read 12)
Example 2:
Example two consists of two equations. Set up cells for both the equations as shown
in the figure below.
