Page 1 of 6 GEOG 2253 – World Regional Geography Class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:00 to 3:15 p.m. in 035 Murray Hall. Instructor: Mr. Aswin Subanthore Department of Geography 346 Murray Hall, Oklahoma State University Email: aswin@okstate.edu Telephone: 405-744-9180 Office Hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. Course Description: This course is a geographical synthesis of world’s major regions. Both physical and human geography of each region are discussed with an emphasis on human-and-environment interaction, exchanges of goods and services, and various geographical diversities as a result. Current topical problems and issues on resource use and exploitation as well as demography and developments are discussed. Students will become familiar with the diverse natural and human environments of each world region as well as their influence on globalization. Required Textbook: Globalization and Diversity: Geography of a Changing World. 3rd Edition. Les Rowntree, Martin Lewis, Marie Price, and William Wyckoff (Prentice Hall, 2011). Course Format: The course involves lecture (PowerPoint presentations), video presentation, and in-class discussions. All course materials including lecture notes, exam study guides, and additional information will be posted on OSU’s Online Classroom website, also known as Desire2Learn or simply D2L ( https://oc.okstate.edu/ ). Grading: 3 Exams: 3 x 100 = 300 points. 6 Quizzes: 6 x 20 = 120 points. 1 Term paper: 1 x 100 = 100 points. Class Participation: 180 points. Total = 700 points. Grading Scale: A = 630 points and above; B = 560 to 629 points; C = 490 to 559 points; D = 420 to 489 points; F = 0 to 419 points.

Page 2 of 6 Grading Items: Exams: There will be three exams during the course of the semester. Exam dates are listed in the course schedule at the end of this syllabus. Each exam will have 50 multiple choice questions worth 2 points per question for a total of 100 points per exam. Scantrons will be provided. Exam will test only the topics covered during the previous weeks corresponding to that exam. Final exam is not comprehensive. A study guide will be made available on D2L website and an in-class review session will be conducted by the Instructor prior to each exam. Quizzes: There will be six quizzes worth 20 points each. Each quiz will consist of 10 question including 5 map-based questions. Scantrons will be provided. Term Paper: One 5-page term paper will be due on 10/28/2011. Both digital (in Microsoft Word format) and paper copies are due by this date. Early submissions are always welcomed. Students are required to submit the paper topic they wish to write by 09/09/2011.
