Chapter 8: The Information Processing Approach Information processing approach : emphasizes that children manipulate information, monitor it, and strategize about it. Cognitive resources : the changes in both capacity and speed of processing. 3 mechanisms for change in cognitive skills Encoding- process by which info. gets stored in memory. Automatically - refers to the ability to process info with little or no effort Strategy construction - creation of new procedures for processing info. Metacognition - knowing about knowing Attention - is the focusing of mental resources Sustained - ability to maintain attention to a selected stimulus for prolonged time (vigilance) Selective – focusing on a specific aspect of experience that is relative Divided - involves concentrating on more than one activity at the same time. Memory - the retention of info over time 1. Encodin g- process by which info gets into memory Rehearsal - conscious repetition of info over time to increase the length of time info stays in memory Levels of Processing Theory- theory stating that processing of memory occurs
