THE COLONIES PRIOR TO THE CIVIL WAR Nearly all governed by chartered company or semi- feudal proprietor. Small population: Combined pop of ~50,000. Economies mostly based on small-scale farming and fishing (other than tobacco in Virginia). Little to no organisation or regulation by government in London.
