Travis Marschner SOC 100-730 Dr. Choudhury Final Paper FIGHT CLUB (1999) Fight Club is described on the DVD cover as a ticking-time-bomb insomniac and a slippery soap salesman channel primal male aggression into a shocking new form of therapy. Their concept catches on, with underground “fight clubs” forming in every town -- until a sensuous and mysterious woman comes between the two men and ignites an out-of-control spiral toward oblivion. Edward Norton is the ticking-time-bomb insomniac that works as a recall coordinator for a major car company. He has a very successful job that helps him buy a condominium of a 15 floor complex. Norton fills his apartment will all the material items that he can get his hands on from IKEA. The Narrator is Edward Norton. Insomnia is starting to take over, so he sees his doctor who will not give him any medication just advice. The doctor advises him to go sit in at “Men Remaining Together,” a group of men that lost their testicles to cancer. A man named Robert Paulsen a.k.a. “Bob” lost his testicles because of weight lifting and steroid use. Bob partners up with the Narrator and helps Norton release his emotions. For the first night in a long time he sleeps better than a baby. Realizing that he needs to go to other meetings he takes the schedule and goes to a group meeting every night of the week. Until Marla Singer shows up whom he calls a tourist that throws off his emotions and he goes back to being the same insomniac. At work, Norton’s boss assigns him to be on the run and away from the office to evaluate accidents. On his return trip he meets a man that sits next to him with the same briefcase, his name is Tyler Durden. Tyler is a soap salesman and maker for Paper Street

Soap Company. On arrival at his house, Norton sees that his apartment caught on fire. Everything was lost in the fire and he decides to call Tyler. Him and Tyler become best friends and after the bar one night he gets into a fight with Tyler. “How much can you know about yourself if you have never been in a fight?” The narrator is starting to think that all the material items do not mean anything and the only way you can live is if they are all stripped from you. Society teaches a person that they can be really successful when they grow up. Little does the narrator know that Tyler blew up his house and is in his sub-conscious? Fight clubs start popping up all over the country and Tyler’s plan starts to be in full-force. As Norton’s split personality, Tyler plans to show the world that everyone is equal when all materialistic items and possessions are stripped away a mission entitled, “Project Mayhem”.
