Katherine Gomez February 19, 2010 Social Psychology Paper #1 For as long as we can remember, women and men have had distinctive roles in society; the women’s role was to nurture, and the males role was to provide. This role has followed us to this day but exaggerated itself beyond belief. Many cultures take these roles and interpret them in different ways. Some women are now trying to break free from these roles, but not without difficulty. The social theory states that small gender differences are magnified in perception by the contrasting social roles occupied by men and women. Therefore the difference in roles is not due to our physical bodies, but to society. Starting at a very tender age, kids are being told the kinds futures they should be striving for and what behaviors they should uphold. From the toys they play with to the clothes they wear.
