Unformatted text preview: Cameron Vollmuth Extra Credit Opportunity Dulcitius- A Comedy? For this extra credit assignment I decided to read Dulcitius , written by Hrosvitha. Dulcitius is about three young Christian virgins, living in the Roman Empire. Governor Dulcitius lusts over these three, Agape, Chionia and Hirena. Despite his efforts, his lust cannot be satisfied and the women constantly mock him, which causes him to sentence them to death. Hrosvitha was a German nun and the first female playwright. We have talked many times in lecture about women playwright, including Hrosvitha of Gandersheim; how no one can name any more than one, Lorraine Hansberry, how they arent recognized like males and how none of their plays show up on influential lists. Hrosvitha is an interesting woman playwright because while reading this, I would have never expected she was a woman. Sure, the three virgins are extremely strong in the play, but it is written with an interesting style.
