Richard Tiller April 11, 2011 Education 202 American Education In the past, American education was a booming industry that many other countries have tried to follow. Unfortunately, the United States education system has been on the decline, and other countries have passed us. Some of the countries that have become major contenders oare China, Japan and India. Many people have debated the process of how to improve the education from having private institutions, having the federal government get involved, or having a hands off approach. I believe the proper approach is to have the federal government get involved. If the shadow of a tree is bent, one must fix the tree and not the shadow. The statement above can be related on how education needs to be fixed. When Mr. George Ward came and spoke to us he mentioned how there are no national standards in education, so each state must make their own. In South Carolina, our standards for reading proficiency are set at one hundred percent. By setting such high standards, we are placed
