Ch 11: The Self Self-Understanding Self-understanding is a child’s cognitive  representation of the self—the substance and content  of the child’s self-conceptions. A child’s self-understanding is based, in part, on the various  roles and membership categories that define who children are. As children develop, their self-understanding changes by  finding and constructing selves.

Self-Understanding A rudimentary form of self-recognition —being  attentive and positive toward one’s image in a mirror —appears as early as 3 months of age. A central, more complete index of self-recognition— the ability to recognize one’s physical features—does  not emerge until the second year. Tested using the  mirror technique  (rouge test)
