A.2 Anabela dos Ramos May 4, 2010 Portuguese 321 Prof. Fagundes Final Exam In Frei de Souza , there were a lot of absorbing characteristics that makes one compare it to universal contexts in life. It made me think about how readers could relate, and how the general public could also connect to it as well. The things that stuck to me were nationalism, the act of escaping, emotions, and pessimistic acts. We see things like this happening a lot in the modern world. The most lasting things before are things that continue to happen today and Almeida Garrett does a good job showing this. The idea of nationalism was interesting. Though in a romantic context, it is seen as a public relation to the modern world and person. This is because the characters in Frei de Souza talk and act showing off their euphemistic patriotism. For example: “O meu pobre pai! Oh meu querido! Sim, sim, mostrai-lhe quem sois eu que vale um português dos verdadeiros!” – This shows not only patriotism but also pride in being
