Unformatted text preview: 10/14/2011 Introduction to African History Settler Colonialism • Mau Mau (but mvmt called themselves Land and Freedom); Gikuyu that lost their land due to the land grab by the British and were fighting for it back from 1952- 1954, through military campaign, but they were defeated militarily by the British forces • “British gulag” • South Africa (oldest and largest settler colonies); Kenya (British gov’t encourage British settlers to come to Kenya and develop it; first job of settler colony is to protect the Europeans from aggression from the “natives”; They have special priveledge) and Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe); and Algeria for the French • The struggle of the Africans in this type of colonialism was taken up with arms.
