Ch. 2 Systems theory- Earth as a system Systems approach: used in natural and social sciences; systems are interrelated, functioning together Essentials of Systems System: entity composed of diverse but interrelated parts that function as a complex whole Components: individual parts of a system; can be a reservoir of matter, energy, an attribute of the system or a subsystem etc. State: of a system- set of important attributes that characterize the ystem at a paticular time. Couplings Couplings: links allowing for flow of info. From one component to the next Positive coupling: change (increase/decrease) in one component in a stimulus that leads to a change of the same direction in the linked component. Negative coupling: change in one component stimulates a change of the opposite direction in the linked component. Feedback Loops Feedback loop: two couplings between components; feedback- self-perpetuating mechanism of change and response to that change.
