Midterm Study Guide Dissuasion: strategies aimed at influencing the adversary’s  decision making and thinking Dissuasion by Deterrence : Convince adversary that if they  challenge you, you will inflict terrifying pain and suffering that  they will not be able to endure  so that they are afraid to act Dissuasion by Defense : Convince adversary that you have the  ability to deny his objectives. If they try to attack you they will not  make it past your defense mechanisms Example where both were used   threats on Sadaam Hussein,  Desert Field Country must have both a o Reputation for resolve o Known ability (capability) In order to make threats Stable Deterrent Balance : crisis stable when neither side has  incentive to strike first To maintain balance decrease 1 st  strike logic Deter: disperse your weapons (spread em out, mobile, hide)  harder for adversary to disarm you Commander Control, ensure survivability of the person who  makes the orders Ensure adversary that you too are deterrable Don’t go to far w/ the following:
