Law of the Sea / Air Space / Outer Space /  Environment Law of the Sea The Sea has more economic resources than what we have  on land Common Heritage of Mankind // Reagan  1958  in Geneva, the law of the Sea was codified o it went from being customary law to being out into  treaties o 4 Conventions 1. Convention on the Territorial Sea and  Contiguous Zone  (200 miles) 2. High Seas, Freedom of the Sea a. Nations with the technology can drill and  get/do whatever they want b. Its for everyone 3. Convention on Fishing and Conservation of  Living Resources at Sea a. Covered contiguous zone, but still left  resources on the High Seas i. Most developed countries benefitted  from the High Seas // US, Japan,  Russia, etc 4. Territorial (Water) Border a. Rich nations wanted smaller border so their  Navies could get close to countries and it  be legal b. Poorer nations wanted greater border c. 1958, 1960, 1970, 1982 they finally  reached a consensus i. 12 miles

Environment this is the treaty where 3 rd  World countries really  decided to assert themselves Freedom of the Sea Changes to Common  Heritage of Mankind Nations will be stopped from exploiting the  High Seas European countries signed and ratified the  Treaty The US did not, BUT they did stop  exploiting Landlocked States have right to use the harbors of other  states Law of the Sea Arctic Provision President Clinton, Bush, and Obama are all asking Congress  to ratify the Treaty so they can gain access Norway, Denmark, Canada, Nations want to be a part of the governing body of the Arctic  Resource Management Air Space and Outer-space State will be content with nothing less than complete  sovereignty over their airspace Nations are very paranoid about this It is a HUGGGGEEEE Violation
