Biol 255 Unit 2C B. Krumhardt, Ph.D., GDCB, ISU 1 Biology 255 Unit 2C Articulations B. Krumhardt, Ph.D. GDCB, Iowa State University Articulations (joints) • Functional classification – Diarthroses - freely movable – Amphiarthroses - slightly moveable – Synarthroses - unmoveable • Structural classification – Fibrous - no synovial cavity, fibrous CT binds, little or no movement • Sutures – fibrous connective tissue between cranial bones • Syndesmoses - fibrous connective tissue, but not as tightly fit as a suture: e.g. distal articulation between tibia + fibula • Gomphoses - peg in socket: teeth in maxillae or mandible – Cartilaginous joints - no synovial cavity, but cartilage binds, little or no movement • Synchondrosis - hyaline cartilage; between epiphysis + diaphysis - epiphyseal plate (temporary joint) or between 1st rib in adult)

B. Krumhardt, Ph.D., GDCB, ISU 2 • Symphysis - broad flat disk of cartilage between bones - slightly movable – Intervertebral disks – Symphysis pubis – Synovial joints - freely moveable • Movement limited by bone structure, tension of connecting ligaments, muscles, and apposition of soft body parts • Synovial cavity - fluid filled •Articular cartilage (hyaline) - at ends of 2 bones • Articular capsule unites 2 bones –Outer layer - fibrous capsule - dense connective tissue connects to periosteum if fibers aligned - "ligament” –Inner layer - synovial membrane - loose connective tissue - encloses synovial fluid • “Pads" between bones with synovial joints
