Political Science 231 – International Relations 01/20/2011 Solving why something happened – what are possible first steps? - Categorization o Global/Systemic Level of Analysis o State Level of Analysis (The nature of the states & the nature/structure of the international system) o Individual Level of Analysis (Explanations that point to an individual) - We look at different level of analysis to explain different events. Systemic Level of Analysis - Helps to first compare domestic politics versus international politics. - Domestic Politics (Sovereignty) o Country broken down into regions (United States has 50 states). o Higher authority (federal government). Has coercive capability. Legitimacy – states accept the federal government as legitimate. If disputes happen between states, they can appeal to the federal government and the federal government will decide. - International Politics (Anarchy) o State Sovereignty Nobody else can tell that state what to do inside their borders.
