11.16.2010 MENA NOTES Religion & Politics - What are the causes of the Islamic Resurgence? o Muhammad, the Rightly Guided Caliphs and the Golden Age of Islam o Pan-Islamism as a reaction of colonialism o Fear of Apostasy – the loss of faith. o “Moral Decay” – Western culture and lifestyles, economics. (ie. Charity); what do the elites owe to the lower class in social justice. - How does Islam affect politics? o Culture and religion are open to interpretations. Women’s rights – inferior? Equal? Islam as the guiding moral force – teaches how the lifestyles and cultures should be. Identity and Self-Determination – being allowed to choose own government without foreign influence. - Form of political Islam o Fundamentalism – literal interpretation of the holy book, Quran. Sharia Law o Islamic Modernism – adaptation of the religious principals too the modern world. o Charismatic Leaders – legitimize secular reforms with religious or culture zeal. - Turkey o Association with Europe and the West Frontier state of the middle east Strong commercial trade between Europe and the Middle East. o
