COHI 100 Lecture 10/11/11 03:01 Semiotics Intro to semiotics Triadic sign Symbol-index-icon Semiotics Sign is anything that can stand for (represent) something else Semiotics = study of signs; how sign systems function Study it because it allows us to question idea of conduit World around us is not just transparent world; it is constructed by humans By being world of signs/made by humans, always necessarily involves  choices/decisions/selections Political b/c it regards these choices Doesn’t have to be large scale; can be attentive and see who owns the signs/what kinds  of choices are being made Understanding that choice gives us the capacity to read cultural/social aspects of reality Who is Casey Anthony? The person who was accused of killing her daughter and then was released from jail The person who was not found guilty of murdering her daughter, as originally accused
