Bao Dang Influences of Genes and Environment Each person is a product of the interaction of genes and environment. Our genes and our choices make each of us unique. Understanding the influence of genetic background on our daily activities, on our personality and cognition helps us to understand ourselves better, to change our behaviors, and to have compassion for people’s behaviors. Our genetic background determines both of our physical and mental activities strongly by influencing the desire, and the ability to participate in those activities. Studies show that our desire in both types of activities could be explained by our genes. For example, in physical activities such as sports, genetic factors account for approximately 29%–62% of the variance in daily exercise behavior and 35%–83% of the variance in sports participation (Bryan et al., 2007). In another example, for some students, desire for mental activities such as learning at school can be reduced because their genes create learned helplessness behavior (Caldarone et al., 2000). Moreover, our genes determine our ability to participate in our daily activities. An example of the influence of genes on the ability of participating in daily activities, especially physical activities, is health. Genetic factors account for 30% to 60% of the variance in blood pressure (Whitfield & McClearn, 2005). Our genes also determine the ability to participate in mental activities. For

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
