Gift of the Holy Ghost Holy Ghost Definition Third member of the Godhead and, as the name implies a personage of Spirit, not possessing a body of flesh and bones ( ). Relationship between the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost - 3 separate beings The a Father has a b body of flesh and bones as tangible as man’s; the Son also; but the Holy Ghost has not a body of flesh and bones, but is a personage of c Spirit . Were it not so, the Holy Ghost could not d dwell in us. Receive Gift of the Holy Ghost The first ordinance After baptism by water, Church members receive the gift of the Holy Ghost through the ordinance of confirmation ( ; 35:5–6 ). This ordinance is also called the “baptism of fire and the Holy Ghost” ( ). The Prophet Joseph Smith said, “Baptism by water is but half a baptism, and is good for nothing without … the baptism of the Holy Ghost” ( Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, sel. Joseph Fielding Smith [1976], 314). President Harold B. Lee taught that the way to purity and holiness is accepting the first four principles and ordinances of the gospel—faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, repentance, baptism, and receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost—and then enduring to the end in keeping all the commandments of God. The Holy Ghost is manifested in every dispensation of the gospel since the beginning, being first made known to Adam ( Moses 6: 51-68 ). During the Great Apostasy (Before Joseph Smith time): No one had the authority to confer the gift of the Holy Ghost or perform other priesthood ordinances ( Apostasy ). The Holy Ghost can be given to a person but that doesn’t mean the HG stays with that person A man may receive the a Holy Ghost, and it may descend upon him and not b tarry with him ( 130:23 ). President Joseph Fielding Smith said, “The Holy Ghost will not dwell with that person who is unwilling to obey and keep the commandments of God or who violates those commandments willfully” ( Church News, 4 Nov. 1961, 14).
