The Third Way Rebecca Ney Islam is proposed as a “third way” because of the corruption that was  part of both western capitalism and eastern communism. Through the  Sharia, Sunna, and Quran, Islam is a way of life that impacts and infiltrates  every aspect of daily habits, society, government, economy, and education.  Both western and eastern systems, however, destroy this integral aspect of  religion, and specifically Islam by secularizing, separating, and obliterating  practices unique to Islam. Mu’Ammar Al-Qadhdhafi was one of the leaders of  the Libyan revolution, and eventually became the President of his country  (Esposito, 83). He strongly proposes Islam as third way to the overbearing,  imperialistic eastern and western structures “the East and the West want… to obliterate every distinguishing mark of our personality and snuff out the  light which guides us” (Qadhdhafi, 83). Sayyid Qutb was a previous member  of the Muslim Brotherhood and executed because of the government’s  suspicions of his plots against Nasir in Egypt. Qutb similarly enforces the  prominence of Islam, as both he and Qadhdhafi  reaffirm the strength of  Islam as a unifying force.  1

The first impetus for instigating a third way is due to the impact of  colonialism from the west. Muslims alike felt that western ideals and  institutions had stripped the qualities that distinguished Islam as a  historically leading power. Qadhdhafi claims that the east and the west  debase the sacred book of the Quran by associating it with mystical and  superstitious ties. Secular governments ridicule such “fables” because neither  the dominating west nor emerging east employs religion as a governing tool.
