Overview. Most folks leave their digital cameras set on AUTO, trusting its complex algorithms to deter- mine the settings for them. These computers (because that’s what they are) are pretty darn good at figur- ing out what will work well, but the camera doesn’t have an acutal brain and does not know what story you intend to tell. We want you to size up a situa- tion, decide how to interpret it photographically and then choose the camera controls that will give you the desired results. Typically, there are four big effects that result from camera-control settings. They operate along two con- tinua: The first continuum involves time, or how long shutter remains open. With a fast shutter speed, you can freeze action in mid air—something the human eye cannot accomplish. With a slow shutter speed, you can blur motion—interpreted as an object in motion. The second continuum involves how much of the distance between you and your camera appears in relatively sharp focus in your photograph. If you use a large hole to let light into the camera, only a small distance will be sharp. This is known as “shallow depth of field” or “selective focus.” This forces the reader to attend to what is sharp by making every- thing in the background and foreground soft. With a small hole in the lens, you can have “deep depth of field” in which everything in from very close to the camera to infinity is in sharp focus. This produces maximum clarity of detail and maximizes visual infor- mation. These four effects are controlled by lens aperture (opening) and shutter speed. To get a correct exposure a certain amount of light must activate a light-sensi- tive chip inside the camera. How much light reaches the chip is a function of these two things: how wide the lens is open and how long it is left open to the light. You can get the same amount of light by vary- ing these two settings in relation to each other. For example, you could make the aperture smaller and compensate by leaving the shutter open longer. Or
