Last week we spoke about composition and the  camera’s spatial relationship to the subject.  We also  need to think about how the camera’s position in the  space of the film can transition smoothly from one  camera setup to the next.  This is where continuity  becomes crucial to Hollywood and to us. When we speak of continuity, we are referring to a  general set of rules and practices that allow for a  relatively seamless transition between different shots  that enable a narrative to move along while still  remaining coherent to the audience.  These rules are  not absolute; some are purposefully (and some  accidentally) violated, creating disorienting results for  viewers.  For the purposes of maintaining a coherent

  The 180-degree Rule  is a general guideline  that, while not always obeyed by all  filmmakers, is a standard convention of  filmmaking.  It states that interactions  between characters exist on an axis and that  the characters should maintain the same  spatial relationship (e.g. person 1 is always  to the right of person 2 during a filmed  conversation in a specific scene) to one
