Lecture 9 MUS 103 March 2, 2009 Georg Friedrich Handel (1685 – 1759) The Messiah (1742) o Presentations of melody = subject o Then varying restatements of the melody o Handel is in London, though he is German born, work with Italian opera o Facing career crisis o His Italian operas have failed in London, though he is celebrated o But he is failing to make money, owing to high fees to pay top singers o Big stars are male altos o Have surgery to keep their voices high o Custom was depraved even at the time o Often done by Italian families on the side who wanted the money, even though it was illegal in Italy o Very few succeeded though of the men who had this done to them o But the men that did succeed became big stars o Owed lots of debt o Right now, opera was an extremely lucrative art o Latest successful opera was in English o Left London for Dublin, Ireland to do charity concerts o *important turn in music history o London was a center and had a lot of money going into it o London considered itself a major international cultural center o So he went into Oratorios Oratorio o Similar to opera, except: o Pseudo dramatic works that incorporate religious texts from the bible Operas are secular o Absence of costumes and décor, scenery o Could be done cheaply (performed during the day so no candles needed, also no costumes or décor costs) o Could be performed during religious holidays (opera theaters were closed) Smart financial move, especially during Lent because no
