Unformatted text preview: Blood supply, Spinal cord, Cranial nerves 5 September 19, 2011 Today Spinal cord & spinal nerves Cranial nerves Hindbrain Spinal Cord Vertebrae identified by area & number (e.g. L3: 3 rd lumbar) Dermatomes = body segments innervated by spinal nerves Lumbar Puncture : sampling CSF for diagnostic purposes The area is made numb by local anesthetic, and a small needle is passed between the bones (vertebrae) of the spine, and posterior to the end of the spinal cord. There is no risk of paralysis. http://health.allrefer.com/pictures-images/vertebra-and-spinal-nerves.html A motor neuron of the peripheral nervous system Sensory Neuron of the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) To the spinal cord and the brain Tactile stimulation (light touch, painful stimulus, thermal stimulus) Sensory neuron of the PNS sending afferent information to the spinal cord from the skin Cell body in dorsal root ganglion Sensory Information (afferent) Efferent information from brain Product of touch to finger Is response of musculature in finger Note : A nerve is a bundle of axons from many neurons.
