1. What is HIV? HIV kills through ‘ opportunistic infections’ HIV is now a chronic, treatable disease HIV is not particularly virulent There are essentially two types of epidemics: ‘High risk group’ epidemics : Men who have sex with men (resurging in West) Sexually active young adults: 15-25 population Sex workers and migrant workers ‘Generalized’ epidemics : Everyone is equally at risk
