MSE 508 Dept. of Materials Science & Engineering Solid State Thermodynamics Spring 2011/Bill Knowlton 1 Problem Set 3 Solutions To determine the Δ H rxn for the reaction in which a compound is formed, Hess' law can be used: product reactant rxn i i i i ii Hn H n H   For more complicated reactions in which two compounds react to form another more complicated compound, the reaction is divided into formation "1/2" reactions. For instance, take the more complicated reaction: M A O 2 +M B O 2 =M A M B O 4 This reaction can be separated into the following formation "1/2" reactions: -(M A + O 2 = M A O 2 ) - Δ H rxn,1 -(M B +O 2 =M B O 2 ) - Δ H rxn,2 M A +M B + 2 O 2 = M A M B O 4 Δ H rxn,3 _____________________ M A O 2 +M B O 2 =M A M B O 4 Note that all three reactions are written as formation reactions and "add" together to form the overall reaction. Also note that the first two reactions are written in the opposite direction as what is shown for the overall reaction; this is why they are shown with a negative signs.
