COMM 273: Reporting and News Writing Fall 2011 Assignment #7: Beat Story Due Thursday, October 13 Rewrite due Thursday, October 20 Points: 50 (Revision: 25) Words: 500 Some reporters cover a completely different topic every single day. More often, reporters are assigned to cover specific beats, or subjects, such as business, education, health, science or government. Working a specific beat gives reporters time to become knowledgeable about the subject and to find relevant sources that can provide useful information on a continuing basis. For this assignment, you won’t have the advantage of being able to cultivate sources over time, but you will assume the role of a beat reporter and find the most newsworthy topic on your beat at the time. First, decide which beat you want to cover. See the list on page 94 in the Harrower book. Second, do some research to see what’s being written about related to your beat. Search The Arbiter, the Statesman and the Press-Tribune. Come up

Or you might think of a new angle for covering an old topic. You have a lot of freedom here. Just make sure your story is well researched, well sourced and relevant to a local audience of BSU and/or Boise readers. As usual, you should use a minimum of three human sources for your story. Provide contact information for each source at the end of the story.
