COMM 273: Reporting and News Writing Fall 2011 Assignment #5: Profile Due Thursday, September 22 Points: 40 Words: 500 Introduction to the Profile Story News consumers love to hear and read about people. What people do, how they do it, what problems they have and how they cope attracts readers and viewers. As a nation, we love to gossip, to know about what other people are doing, saying, feeling. It is a way of helping us figure out who we are and to cope with our own feelings, doings and opinions. Stories about people are what the audience will remember and talk about after turning away from the newscast or putting down the paper. These stories are the memorable part of the news product. Although profile stories are often classified as feature stories, to be effective they must have a news element . The reporter must show the subject doing something interesting or in an interesting way for the reader or viewer to see the value in the story. These stories will do more than any other type to develop your writing skill. Producing
