REVIEW WORKSHEET 1: NAME: Brian Do _______________________________ DATE: _ 9/10/09 _______________________ 1. Detergents and phospholipids are both amphipathic molecules. However, when exposed to water, detergents aggregate into small clusters called micelles while phospholipids form closed spherical liposomes. Explain what the difference is between the structure of a detergent compared to the structure of a phospholipid that causes detergents to form micelles instead of liposomes. Detergents that form micelles are due to its single chain amphiphile make-up meaning it has one hydrophobic tail and one hydrophilic head and is in a formation of a cone shape because tail all basically sticks together at center. The double chain amphiphile forms spherical liposome because of its double chain amphiphile make-up, a lipid bilayer consisting of two hydrophilic heads and the 1 or 2 hydrophobic tail per head. 2. Which of the following is FALSE of condensation reactions? Explain. A.
