CRITIQUING PR ARTICLES 2 Abstract The role of school leaders is multifaceted. An important sector of a school leader’s duties is public relations. Public relations, also referred to as simply PR, is intended to help improve an organization’s programs and services through planned and systematic management. PR should be the concern of everyone involved with any part of the administration of education to students. This includes parents, school board members, school district personnel, individual school principals, school teachers and coaches. Each holds an important role in the overall success of a school’s PR strategy, which maintains the ultimate responsibility to communicate the best interests of the education system to all relevant parties. A good school public relations strategy will support, plan and execute significant communications between the school, their students and the community which supports the school. PR should effectively communicate to parents and taxpayers how the school is spending their money. School leaders need to be aware that when PR is used in an efficient manner, it shouldn’t only be employed in times of crises. Truthfully, PR is just as important when there is good news to share. CRITIQUING PR ARTICLES 3 Critiquing Articles on the Public Relations Role of School Leaders Public Relations (PR) is an important, although often overlooked, part of any school’s overall success strategy. At the district-level administration and within individual school administrations, there is usually a person leader that maintains oversight of the PR programs and services offered. If it makes sense to do, this person may even be the principal of a school. PR can take many shapes and the seven articles chosen should shed some light on the subject. Each article was selected to be compared and contrasted to the others. The information contained in each article can be extracted and combined to improve and increase the effectiveness of public relations strategies across the United States as a whole. Why Public Relations is Needed In cases of both public schools and private schools, public relations is the strategic method to keep schools connected with their communities. This is vital to the success of the school because without community support, the school will not be able to function at its full potential. This article names a number of the top reasons that will hinder a school’s success if they don’t maintain an acceptable public relations policy. First, the PR strategy will assist the school with building and sustaining a proper budget.
