Lecture Session 1 09/09/2009 14:04:00 Do see technology as beneficial, but unlike Starting Out with Tiles Oberdiek Consider technology in our everyday lives. Doesn’t it seem as if technologies  create more problems than they resolve? “It can seem that the technological ‘solution’ to one problems leads just to the   creation  of many, unanticipated problems” (12) o We are all aware of this idea about technology; and because of it, we  feel ambivalent “Out of these feelings towards technology have grown the conflicting visions,   one optimistic the other pessimistic, one of technical omnipotence the other   of technical impotence, one of control of the environment and human destiny   through technology the other of technological systems running out of control.”   (12) Optimism What is optimism? o Optimism is an attitude toward technology that we encounter in others  in the world, which expresses positions on values (things that are  important) and beliefs about agency (who and what is responsible) Optimists hold the technology and its products are value neutral; technologies  are passive tools which can be used for good or evil o “If technology is sometimes used improperly to cause harm, the fault   lies with is human operators and developers, not with technology” (14) “So far from seeing human beings as helpless in the face of inexorable   technological progress, optimists tend to see technology as a route to virtually
