More Laws of Motion 10/09/2009 07:38:00 Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) Tycho Brahe (1546-1601) o was Kepler’s “thesis advisor” o great observer 20 years data on planetary motion  Kepler analyzed data after Tycho died o Concentrated on orbit of Mars Discovered 3 Laws o Each planet moves around orbit in ellipse, with sun at one focus Key to improvement in accuracy of sun centered solar system o The straight line joining the planet and then sun sweeps out equal  areas in equal amounts of time Means planets move faster the closer they are to the sun o For solar system, and P in years and a in AU (Period)  = (radius) 3  (with P in years and r in AU) Isaac Newton (1643-1727) One of the greatest geniuses of the millennium o Invented calculus o Mechanics (the description of how things move) Kepler’s laws can be derived from Newton’s law
