The Search for Life Elsewhere 15/10/2009 07:36:00 Three Stages of Evolution A slowly rotating interstellar gas clod begins to contract  because of its own  gravity A central condensation forms, and the cloud rotates faster and flattens The sun forms in the dead center, surrounded by a disk of gas Formation of the Solar System, Stage 1 (over roughly 25,000 yrs) Composition depends on location in the Solar System o Warm areas near the Sun, heavier elements condense out, but lighter  elements and molecules do not o Cooler areas farther away from Sun, lighter compounds also condense  into various ices As shown in lot, the dividing line for water is outside of Mars and before  Jupiter. (initial pieces of Earth were rocks, and di not have any water/ice.) Formation of the Solar System, Stage 2 (about 1 million years) Settling towards disk and accretion into first planetisimals
