Biology 141 Definitions 03:13 Lecture #1: Taxonomy: The effort to name and classify organisms. Phylogeny: The study of an organism’s actual genealogical relationship. Prokaryote: Any organism without a nucleus. Eukaryote: Any organism with a nucleus. Domain: a broad taxonomic level which separate life into, Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya Taxonomic levels: kingdom; phylum; class; order; family; genus; species Atomic number: the number of protons in an element. Mass number: the sum of the protons and neutrons in an atom. Isotope: a form of an element with different numbers of neutrons. Electron shell: the orbitals around an atom, grouped into levels. Valence electron: electrons found in the outermost shell. Covalent bonds: these form when two atoms bond by sharing electrons. Polar: Asymmetrical. Carrying a partial positive charge on one side of a molecule and a partial negative charge on the other – generally hydrophilic. Nonpolar: Electronegativity: A measure of the ability of an atom to attract electrons toward itself from an atom to which it is bonded. Anion: A negatively charged ion.
