Matthew Francis American Heritage 100, Section 48 7 November 2008 Glory 1. Captain Shaw’s immediate reaction to being named colonel of the first black regiment was a state of shock and indecision. His friend, in his drunken state, suggests that to take the position would be crazy and a bad idea. Despite these negative comments from his friend, Shaw decides he is going to take the position and announces it to his friend and asks him to accompany him. 2. The Confederacy issued a proclamation stating that any black soldier found carrying arms against the South would be returned to a state of slavery, any black soldier found in a Federal uniform would be put to death, and any white officer in command of black soldiers would also be put to death. Because of this, they were offered the option to leave and quit the army. None take up the offer; they all remain to fight. 3. Colonel Shaw and the Irish sergeant are so hard on the men of the 54 th because they are preparing the men for battle. It is their viewpoint that these men are
