Math 1513 Sec R.5 1 Section R.5 The Basics of Equation Solving An equation is a statement that two expressions are equal. To solve an equation in one variable means to find all values of the variable that make the equation true. Equation-Solving Principles The Addition Principle : If a b is true then a c b c    is true. This basically says you can add the same quantity to both sides of an equation and the new equation is true. You can also subtract the same quantity from both sides and still have an equivalent equation. The Multiplication Principle : If a b is true then ac bc is true. This basically says you can multiply both sides of an equation by a number and the new equation is true. The Square Root Principle :
