U NIT III: T HE P ROFESSIONAL C OMMUNITY This time, we’ll be looking at the ways that people in different professional communities write, frame, and present their ideas . So you’re going to pick either an academic major or a professional field that you’re interested in exploring, do some research about your field so that you become more familiar with it, prepare a related resume (and cover letter), and – finally – complete any application for a fellowship (or something else that we discuss) that relates to your major or field. T HINKING ABOUT A M AJOR /C AREER Quite a few of you wrote about what you’d like to do (as far as majors or careers are concerned, at least) on the first day of class. Some of you weren’t sure. If you know – you’re all set. But if you don’t – don’t worry. First of all, anything you select now is tentative.
