Wolff 1 Stefan Wolff Ms. Laurel Harbin IDS2936 - Section 13 September 2010 The Art of Living The journey to self-actualization is a daunting one, braved by those seeking to reach a higher state of being in this life to, hopefully, leave a mark on the world and live the quintessential “good life.” Since the dawn of human culture, man as attempted to find that path, turning to societal institutions such as religion and philosophy to uncover the path to the good life. In Herman Hesse’s poem “Siddhartha,” Siddhartha does what countless people have before him and tries to reach the divine state of Nirvana, break- ing out of the mortal life cycle to reach the true enlightenment of the mind, body, and soul. However, Siddhartha’s struggle to attain this highest state of being is not a first, for across the world others have undertaken his same charge. Peter J.
