Violence against Women Revisiting Family – The Same Sex Marriage Debate - Legal debate began in 1993 with Hawaii Supreme Court decision - Massachusetts 2003 Supreme Court decision - Six states issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples - Several states recognize civil unions (provide most or all legal rights afforded to married couples - Forty-one states ban same sex marriage (DOMA) - Majority support civil unions, majority under 35 support same-sex marriage - Legalizing same-sex marriage has not increased divorce among different-sex couples Gendered Continuum of Violence - Dominator model – violence used to keep order, maintain hierarchy o Patriarchal and authoritarian o Connection between state violence and interpersonal violence - Partnership Model – sexual equality, less hierarchical and less authoritarian o Less interpersonal and state violence Statistics on violence - US Department of Justice – every 9 seconds a person over 12 years old is sexually assaulted o Almost 90% of victims were women and girls
